The Internet of Things (IoT) is a fast- moving and expansive domain with an evolving introduction of new technologies, products and services world-wide. Considerable empahsis is being placed on optimizing IoT for inclusion in Smart Cities by manufactuers, city-planners, and IEEE Socities to accommodate the population shift to urban areas in a sustainabile way.

The IEEE IoT Consortium's Smart Cities Working Group, formed in 2018, is focused on identifying key aspects of IoT that will benefit from standardization to benefit urban planners and the people who inhabit communities.
