Storage in Unpriced Utility Applications - Finding Value

New energy storage technologies can make electric grids better, but the absence of industry-recognized safety and performance standards is delaying development of this potential. Three examples from Hawaii, the mid-Atlantic grid operator PJM, and New York City illustrate how opportunities and benefits of battery deployment are inhibited by lack of understanding between vendors, customers, and third-party stakeholders. Addressing this communication gap is likely to be useful for a wide assortment of smart-grid technologies.
